Common Queries
What is cold pressed oil really?
Any oil extracted without additional external pressure/temperature and typically not refined. This
preserves the natural characteristics of the oil and is generally far more healthy than processed/refined oils.
What happens to oils extracted under heat and/or refined?
Extraction under heat/pressure, chemical/enzyme extraction, all increase the amount of oil that can be extracted from seeds but then base oil characteristics are lost including vital vitamins and minerals. When oils are refined, chemicals are used at various stages of extraction (to provide colour to the oil, extend life etc). This removes a lot of healthy anti-oxidants naturally present in oils.
What is the benefit of cold pressed oil?
1. Oil is natural and chemical free since no additives added at any stage
2. Not processed or refined and hence natural characteristics remain intact
3. High in anti-oxidants and Vitamin E
4. Free from unhealthy trans-fat
5. Better viscosity than processed oil and more flavourful naturally
Why is jaggery used for sesame oil?
A small quantity of jaggery is used during extraction for 2 reasons
As a binding agent to extract the oil
To give the flavour to the sesame oil (sesame oil on its own is bitter and jaggery is both sweet and has anti-oxidant properties)
Both sugarcane and palm jaggery are used
What jaggery do you use?
We use either sugarcane jaggery or palm jaggery. We source them from carefully selected vendors so as to ensure no contamination. Palm jaggery is considered more nutritious and slightly more expensive.
We ABSOLUTELY DO NOT use molasses or other cheap alternatives to cut cost and compromise on quality.
Do you filter?
We do basic settling and cloth filtration to ensure minimal sedimentation but that's it. This is sufficient to retain oil quality. Depending on your needs we can provide both filtered and unfiltered oils.
Is your oil refined?
No, our oils are not refined and fully natural.
I see a small sediment in the bottle after some time. Is that bad?
Since we do not pressure filter our oils, you might see a slight sedimentation when the container is left without movement for a month. This is absolutely ok to use.
The oil colour is different from last time?
Raw material for oil differs based on season and where the seeds are grown. We select the best available for your consumption. Since there is no artificial colouring or additives added, oil colour varies slightly based on source of the seed. But the quality remains the best there is.
How do I store the oil?
Store the oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep oil away from contact with water.
How long can I store the oil?
The oil can be stored for at least 4 to 6 months from the date of packing. Ensure that there is no contact with water and you are good! In the unlikely event you find an issue with the oil or if you feel the container has been tampered with, do get in touch with us immediately through phone/email.
What sesame seeds do you use?
Our sesame oils are made from dark sesame seeds (RED/BLACK/BROWN) and should work well for most types of cooking and flavouring.
Sesame oils from darker seeds have higher smoke points than oil from white sesame seeds and hence better suited for regular cooking.
Why is there only a mild aroma? other packaged oils have a strong aroma!
Most packaged oils are extracted under heat and pressure. Even some "cold pressed" oils that use molasses as an ingredient extract oil under heat as molasses tends to heat the mixture when grinding. Heat releases aroma. Sometimes artificial agents are added as well to maintain the aroma.
While cold pressed oils may not have a strong aroma when opened, they smell and taste delicious when used.
